Why in News?

Kerala is presently set to become the first smoke-free State in the nation with public sector oil companies looking 100% LPG penetration here.

Highlights:

*LPG is being provided beyond commercial considerations with the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana started by Modi government.
*With three packaging plants at Kochi, Kozhikode, and Kollam, LPG is being brought to 49.79 lakh clients through 308 wholesalers. 
*The Indian Oil is likewise arranged to provide with new generation fuels like CNG and other green fuels.
*Pipe gas supply of LPG is likewise being endeavored by the company. 
*Villages getting symbolic smoke-free certificates have been making headlines in the country for some time now.
*Kerala is one of the States with the most penetration of LPG, which is transforming lifestyles.
*The goal has nearly been achieved in most villages, towns and cities in the Kerala.
*LPG utilization was 933.3 TMT (thousand tons) in the Kerala in 2017-18. It is evaluated that one crore tonnes of discharges, from harmful gases like firewood cooking, have been contained and 25 lakh trees have been saved.

Objectives of PMUY:

*The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) or the Ujjwala Scheme was propelled by PM Modi on May 1, 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.
*The plan intends to protect women and kids from the smoke transmitted from family using firewood for cooking purposes. 
*Under the scheme, families below the poverty line are to be provided with LPG connections with a support of Rs. 1,600 per connection in the next three years.
*The ambitious scheme also laid down a condition — that the LPG connections will be issued in the name of the women of the households. The scheme promises to install five crore connections by the end of 2019.
*Eligible households will be identified in consultation with state governments and Union territories. The scheme is being implemented by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Identified BPL families through the Socio Economic Caste Census Data (SECCD).
*Beneficiaries from the SC/ST households, beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), Antyoday Anna Yojana, forest dwellers, most backward classes, Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes, people residing in Islands and rivers were added to the SECCD.
