Why in News?

Professor M.S. Swaminathan — founder of the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) — was awarded the first World Agriculture Prize at the 11th Global Agriculture Leadership Summit in New Delhi recently.

Objectives:

*Eminent scientist and Prof. MS Swaminathan is known as the chief architect of India’s Green Revolution awarded the World Agriculture Prize.
*MS Swaminathan got this award at a special session on “Swaminathan Global Dialogue on Climate Change and Food Security” organised by the Indian Council of food and Agriculture (ICFA).
*He is awarded for creating fellowships at MSSRF at the post-graduate level, to convert the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into field-level accomplishments.
*The fellowship would help promote linkages between agriculture, nutrition and health, through a ‘Farming Systems for Nutrition’ programme.
*The fellowship would be an opportunity for young scholars to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including eradication of hunger and climate change.
*The five areas considered for the fellowship are: the UN Sustainable Development Goal 2 of Zero Hunger, Farming System for Nutrition (FSN), genetic garden of bio-fortified crops and halophytes, bio-valley for curative and culinary diversity and eco-technologies for eco-enterprises.

About MS Swaminathan:

*Swaminathan is known as the "Father of Indian Green Revolution" for his leadership and success in introducing and further developing high-yielding varieties of wheat in India.
*MS Swaminathan has been hailed by the United Nations Environment Program as “The Father of Economic Ecology” owing to his commitment towards the ever-green revolution movement in agriculture.
*His stated vision is to rid the world of hunger and poverty.
* Swaminathan is an advocate of moving India to sustainable development, especially using environmentally sustainable agriculture, yipee sustainable food security and the preservation of biodiversity, which he calls an "evergreen revolution."
* From 1972 to 1979 he was director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
*He was Principal Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture from 1979 to 1980.
*He served as Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (1982–88) and became president of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in 1988.

About World Agriculture Prize:

*The World Agriculture Prize will be awarded to an academic/faculty member from a higher education institution working in the disciplines relating to the agricultural and life sciences – including but not limited to agriculture, forestry, natural resources, food, bio based products, bioenergy, rural development and the environment. Such disciplines are inclusive of both the natural and social sciences.  
*The World Agriculture Prize will be awarded in recognition of the academic/faculty member’s life time achievements
