Why in News?

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has signed a three-year, ₹11 crore deal with The Energy and Research Institute to set up a centre to produce “advanced biofuels and bio-commodities.

Highlights:

*DBT has signed a three-year, ₹11 crore deal with The Energy and Research Institute to set up a centre to produce “advanced biofuels and bio-commodities.
*This is the fifth such dedicated centre for bioenergy-research and development set up by the Department.
*The others are located at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi; the Indian Institute of Technology-Guwahati; Transtech Green Power Limited, Jaipur; and the Oil and Natural Gas Energy Centre in the National Capital Region.
*The bio-centre would be focussed on not only developing technology but also commercialising it.
*There about a 100 scientists in the country, tasked with research projects to achieve the goals spelt out in the biofuel policy, which envisages high-quality algal biodiesel, cellulosic ethanol, bio butanol and bio hydrogen, according to the DBT.
*Other than fuel, by-products envisaged at the TERI-DBT Centre include food, feed, nutrition supplements, bio-plastics and novelty speciality chemicals.

What is TERI ?

*TERI is a non-profit research institution that conducts research work in the fields of energy, environment and sustainable development, aims to focus on formulating local and national level strategies for shaping global solutions to critical issues. Its key focus lies in promoting clean energy, water management, pollution management, sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.

Significance of Biofuel:

*Energy is an essential input for social development and economic growth. The socioeconomic impacts on a local economy arising from providing power through renewable resources instead of conventional generation technologies are very important.
*Biofuels in India are of strategic importance as it augers well with the ongoing initiatives of the Government such as Make in India, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Skill Development and offers great opportunity to integrate with the ambitious targets of doubling of Farmers Income, Import Reduction, Employment Generation, Waste to Wealth Creation.
*Liquid biofuels (mainly ethanol and biodiesel) have been investigated as alternative resources to resolve the demanding consumption of conventional gasoline and diesel fuels from fossil fuels. Social, political, economic, and environmental aspects related to biofuels are overviewed and issues associated with future liquid fuels demand are proposed to encourage energy experts to contribute to the emerging field of energy research.
*The promising transportation fuels are ethanol, biodiesel, hydrogen, biogas, and natural gas. Electricity and hydrogen are principal energy carriers which can be produced from all primary energy sources.
