Why in News?

Country’s heaviest satellite to be carried on board an indigenous rocket was successfully launched into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).

*The team went ahead with the launch of the GSAT-29 on board its second developmental flight GSLV-MkIII D2 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota to clear blue skies as plumes of smoke from the rocket left a trail in the horizon after lift-off from the second launch pad at 5.08 p.m.
*The satellite was placed in a geo-synchronous transfer orbit 17 minutes after launch.
*The first operational mission of this vehicle (GSLV-MkIII) is going to be none other than the Chandrayaan-II mission in January next year.
*This vehicle is going to carry a human to space three years from now. Kudos to this excellent launcher of India.
*The Ku-band and Ka-band payloads are expected to cater to communication requirements for people in remote areas in the country, especially Jammu and Kashmir, and the North-East.

About GSAT-29

*GSAT-29 is a high-throughput communication satellite developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
*The mission aims at providing high-speed bandwidth to Village Resource Centres (VRC) in rural areas.
*The two Ku and Ka operational payloads will provide communication services to Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast India under Digital India programme.
*GSAT-29 was the heaviest satellite placed in orbit by an Indian launch vehicle.

*The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV-III) also referred to as the Launch Vehicle Mark 3 (LVM3) is a three-stage medium-lift launch vehicle developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
*It is designed to launch satellites into geostationary orbit and is intended as a launch vehicle for crewed missions under the Indian Human Spaceflight Programme.
*The GSLV-III has a higher payload capacity than the similarly named GSLV.
*As P.M Modi announced in his Independence Day speech,an Indian foray into human spaceflight in 2022 with the aim of sending a crewed spacecraft called Gaganyaan to low Earth orbit, the GSLV Mk III will be the launch vehicle for this mission.

*The success of GSLV MkIII-D2 marks an important milestone in Indian space programme towards achieving self-reliance in launching heavier satellites.
*The success of this flight also signifies the completion of the experimental phase of GSLV Mark III.With declaring GSLV MKIII operational, Chandrayaan-2 and Gaganyaan missions will be launched by this heavy-lifter.
